As someone who used to be ‘part of the magic’ I hate to shatter your fantasties, but to my west coast readers - note that I say this like I have east coast readers, I can dream, can’t I? - anyway, to my west coast readers, the Olympics that you see on primetime are not really live….I know, I know - you’re thinking that I am going to tell you that the Easter Bunny isn’t real next - well, I can’t speak for the Bunny, but despite the ‘LIVE’ bug in the upper-right-hand corner of the screen the Olympics you see east of the Eastern time zone are tape-delayed. To those of us who have watched west coast TV for any length of time we have grown accustomed to the “LIVE, except on the West Coast” disclaimer that accompanies pretty much every ‘live’ TV event including those originating on our coast with the exception of sporting events - we get to see those truly live! So, what’s up NBC? Don’t want to screw up the primetime schedule by having coverage start at 5 p.m. PDT? But, I digress there are plenty of other blogs griping about that. I want to get to the real point of this article and why all this back story is important:

So, we now know that NBC thinks that they have been pulling the wool over our west coast eyes, but in a entry posted on a blog that covers the industry a tipster says that the Men’s 4 x 100M swimming final, where Phelps could get his 8th gold medal, may be live to all time zones. From the TVNewser site,

NBC giving serious consideration to airing Saturday’s prime-time Olympic coverage live in all time zones due to Michael Phelps‘ potential 8th gold medal. This would allow full network to show race as it is happening. Otherwise, West Coast viewers would see it three hours after it takes place. Final decision may be made late Thursday night EDT.

So, let’s hold our hopes up that Phelps’ keeps winning those gold medals - that way we will be able to see him go for the 8th (in these games) live. And just so you know that I’m live it’s 2 minutes ’til 10 PDT and I have yet to see Phelps’ swim tonight - somehow my Google homepage knows that he took a gold already…oh, and so do my east coast readers - whoever they are.

By the time you read this the Beijing Olympics’ Opening Ceremony will have already started, and depending on when you read this they may already be over, but here in the U.S. we will not see the Opening Ceremony, scheduled for 8:08 PM local time in Beijing (GMT +8), for another 12-15 hours. None the less, I wait with anticipation for 7:30 PM Eastern/Pacific when NBC will (re)broadcast the Olympic Opening Ceremony here in the States. Now, most of you who know me well know that I do not particularly care for sporting events, but something about the Olympics is different - I think that it is the spectacle of it all. NBC’s “Nightly News with Brian Williams” began broadcasting live from Beijing yesterday evening and will be there for the duration; of course, the network has the U.S. broadcast rights for the Olympics through 2012 so sending the flagship news team is really a no-brainer. But, something about these Olympic games are especially important, I believe, because of their location: inside the world’s next great superpower. We have already seen a multitude of stories coming out of China about the government’s determination at any cost to get this right, tearing down entire complexes of homes, mandatory factory closures and taking cars off of the road to ease pollution. So, with every news outlet in the world focusing on Beijing, I heard that NBC alone has some 4,000 staffers there, it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Oh, and I guess to see all those amazing atheletes compete too.

[Eds. Note: Apologies for this just coming out today, it's been germinating in the unpublished items all week.]

As I am sure most everyone who reads this blog is aware, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released last week. I really wanted to see it and so did my dad, so we made plans to go on Saturday morning. I checked the show times and saw that the first one was at 9:30 a.m.; in an effort to miss the large crowds later in the day we opted for the early show. The theatre was still pretty busy that early - about two-thirds full - including a lot of families. The film was great, of course, I don’t think that you can go wrong with a Spielberg/Lucas combo. I will say this, there were some parts of it that I thought were a little implausible, even for an Indiana Jones flick, but the overall story was still entertaining. I totally didn’t realize that Cate Blanchett was the Russian doctor until I saw the credits - what a chameleon of an actress she is. Overall, 4/5 stars. Dad and I then traveled up to Long Beach for lunch. Dad had a friend who opened a pizza / sandwich shop in Downtown LBC on Broadway and Pine (Broadway Pizza). It turned out to be really good, so if you happened to be in the Long Beach area and are looking for lunch, stop in.

After fun and frivolity in the morning it was time to head over to church to say goodbye to our current video control room. It marked the last weekend in that space and we will be moving into our new control centre with side-by-side control rooms and a its own green room this weekend - it promises to be an exciting next few weeks as we settle in and learn all the new equipment. I’ll try to get some pictures up in the coming week.

Sunday was a pretty lazy day. At church we had our first training session on the new cameras - we’ll see how the trainings went in the next couple of weeks. Sharon, Becky, Kurt and I then went to lunch at another Long Beach restaurant, Acapulco’s. I had eaten there once before and once or twice at the one in Anaheim, but no one else had. The times that I eaten there before seemed fine. This time was not. Becky went with the brunch buffet. Sharon, Kurt and I all looked at the special menu and decided on the same thing - the Taquitos Grande - which looked really good. All of the food, even that from the buffet, seemed to be loaded with grease. Sharon’s taquitos literally had grease dripping off of them on to the table. In short, it was disgusting! I’m not sure of it was just this Acapulco’s or what, but I know we won’t be going back. After lunch it was back to Sharon’s house, where Kurt, Becky and I played some croquet out on the side lawn. Later that evening, we were joined by Sally, Christie and Blair and enjoyed a lovely dinner at Buca di Beppo.

A little precursor explanation to what we did on Monday, Memorial Day…a couple of weeks ago I had mentioned to Sharon that there are a lot of attractions and diversions in southern California that we had all yet to see. On Saturday night we decided to make a list, one of the items on that list was the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. So on Monday morning, Sharon, Kurt, Becky and I hoped in the car and made the trek northward. We arrived at about 10:30 and made our way inside. I will not recount the whole library step-by-step because you really should see it for yourself, but we did see the exhibit with Mrs. Reagan’s dresses, several of President Reagan’s letters and materials from his gubernatorial and presidential campaigns. And, of course, the crowning jewel of the library the 707 used as Air Force One while President Reagan was in office. It is pretty amazing to see the technology that was available to the president even back then. The battery was dead in my camera, so I will have to defer the pictures to Becky. On our way back we stopped by UCLA and drove through the campus (another item on our list), stopped for lunch and then made our way back home.

After another sixteen weeks of instruction, another semester is recorded into the transcript. Well it will be shortly, once my instructors decide to record grades. Anyway, this semester concluded my General Education requirements and as soon as Cal State Fullerton gets off their tusks and approves my application I should be able to work on my major requirements. For those of you keeping track, since I went back-to-school full-time last August, I have completed 37 semester units. Now, I’m ready for the lazy days of summer!! Actually, I am looking for a part-time job and don’t hope to lead a life of leisure for very long.

In other news, I stopped by church this week to take a sneak peek of the new control centre and it is awesome!! Ben Mankin and his team are doing an amazing job. I cannot wait until we move-in next weekend!
